The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, inaugurated in 1932 in its current location in the Brigidi and Buonsignori Palaces, is one of the most important Italian collections of gold-ground panel paintings from the Sienese 14th and 15th centuries. This rich collection documents Sienese painting from the 12th to the 18th centuries.
The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena is the city's most important art gallery and one of the largest collections of gold-ground paintings from the Sienese 14th and 15th centuries in the world. Palazzo Buonsignori, despite its construction dating back to the 15th century, features a façade directly inspired by the city's medieval public palace, thanks in part to purist restorations in the second half of the 19th century. Palazzo Brigidi, on the other hand, is of older construction, dating back to the 14th century, and is generally identified as the former residence of the Pannocchieschi family. On the second floor, in the first two rooms, we admire the oldest works, including some by Guido da Siena. Four rooms house a corpus of works by Duccio and his followers, testifying to the definitive establishment of a Sienese school of painting of the highest caliber. Two rooms are dedicated to Simone Martini and his followers. Other rooms focus on the transition between the Sienese 14th century and the early Renaissance, with works by Taddeo di Bartolo particularly notable. Then there are rooms occupied by artists such as Giovanni di Paolo, Stefano di Giovanni known as Sassetta, witnesses of a period, the Sienese Renaissance, little considered. The mature Renaissance is instead collected in two other rooms with works by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Matteo di Giovanni and Neroccio di Bartolomeo. In the adjacent loggia the Madonna of Humility by Domenico di Bartolo (1433) is proudly displayed. In the last room there is a rich gallery of works depicting Sienese saints. On the lower floor you can admire works of 16th-century Sienese art by artists such as Antonio Bazzi known as Il Sodoma (Christ at the Column and Deposition) and Domenico Beccafumi (Birth of the Madonna and Saint Michael Chasing Away the Rebel Angels). The collection was begun by the abbot Giuseppe Ciaccheri at the end of the 18th century and subsequently expanded through bequests and donations. In 1930 it became state property. In 1977, the Sculpture Hall was inaugurated inside the palace, with works by Sienese masters from the 14th and 15th centuries.
