La Madonna in trono con Bambino, San Girolamo, una Santa, un Santo, Santa Caterina da Siena Siena
Artist: Neroccio di Bartolomeo Landi
Current location: Pinacoteca Nazionale
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera on panel, 70.5 x 55 cm.
The work is a classic example of the refined sacred art of Neroccio di Bartolomeo, a pupil of Vecchietta and a close collaborator of Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
The panel is part of the "Sacred Conversation" tradition and is characterized by a complex identification of some of the celestial figures arranged around the Virgin's throne.
The Virgin Enthroned with Child, the fulcrum of the composition, is depicted with the elegance and aristocratic features typical of the painter's style.
Saint Jerome is recognizable by his classical iconographic attributes related to the hermitage and his role as a Doctor of the Church.
Saint Catherine of Siena is a pivotal figure in Sienese religious identity, a constant presence in local commissions of the period.
The figures that are difficult to identify are: the identity of the second female figure, disputed between Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Mary Magdalene;
the identification of the second male figure, probably Saint Benedict.
