The now-extinct church of San Giovanni Battista, annexed to a convent of Augustinian nuns, stood in the Porta Pispini district and was long known as San Giovanni Battista alla Porta di Busseto or Abbadia Nuova.
These names derived from its proximity to the Porta di Busseto, which once opened in the walls between Porta Pispini and Porta Ovile, and to the so-called Abbadia Nuova; the ancient monastery of Saints James and Philip, which, from the late 16th century, became the seat of the convent of the Poor Clares.
Today, due to the suppression of the Poor Clares at the beginning of the 19th century, it houses the Santa Chiara barracks.
As a reminder of the ancient form of the church of San Giovanni Battista, there remain some old photographs and the famous map of Siena, drawn at the end of the 16th century by Francesco Vanni, from which the image published here was extracted.
