Artist: Andrea di Bartolo
Year: 1400 circa
Current location: Museo d'Arte Sacra della Val d'Arbia
Original location: Santi Pietro e Paolo
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The polyptych was made up of several elements as shown by the traces of pins. Romagnoli, recalling the work, says that under the frame of the angel the name of the author could be read and reports the inscription with an incomplete addition: "ANDREAS.BARTOLI.MAGISTRI FREDI.DE SENIS.D(EPINXIT). Brogi (1862 ed. 1897) read the signature of Andrea di Bartolo and added a date "1397?" without specifying where he had obtained it. At the exhibition of Ancient Sienese Art, due to a misunderstanding in the signature, the angel and the Annunciation were attributed to Bartolo di Fredi while the lateral saints were referred to the "manner of Pietro Lorenzetti". Perkins (1904) and Langton Douglas (1904, 1908) attribute the panels, also mentioned by Berenson (1906), to Andrea di Bartolo, as does De Nicola (1907, 1921). For Padovani (1979 ed. 1981) the polyptych can be dated towards the end of the fourteenth century and the doubtful date of 1397, suggested by Brogi, can be considered reliable.
