Sant'Antonio da Padova Siena
Artist: Sodoma
Year: 1518 - 1532
Current location: Oratorio di S.Bernardino - Museo Diocesano
Original location: Oratorio di San Bernardino al Prato
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work is part of the famous decorative cycle of the Upper Oratory, executed in several stages by the Vercelli painter in parallel with other great masters of the Sienese school such as Domenico Beccafumi and Girolamo del Pacchia.
The fresco is inserted into a false architectural niche, in keeping with the typical Renaissance taste for visual deception.
Although the main decoration of the oratory began in 1518 (the year in which Sodoma painted several figures of saints and large Marian scenes), the overall work and the last payments to the artist lasted until 1532.
The figure demonstrates Sodoma's maturity, combining the monumentality learned during his Roman sojourns, exposed to the art of Raphael, and the soft sfumato of Leonardo's style.
