DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work once decorated the historic Sienese church located opposite Palazzo Tolomei. Another panel by the painter, depicting Saint George Slaying the Dragon, also comes from the same complex.
Over the centuries, the original structure has been fragmented.
Nineteenth-century art historians, such as Ettore Romagnoli, already reported the work's dismemberment and the discovery of some parts confined to the church bell tower.
Over time, the panel has been the subject of critical debate. It was initially associated with 13th-century and later 15th-century painters, before finally being definitively recognized as a masterpiece by Sano di Pietro.
The painting faithfully reflects the canons of the early Sienese Renaissance and the late Gothic period and maintains its characteristic formal elegance.
The marked use of gold and the delicacy of the lines have made it attributable to the workshop of Sano di Pietro, one of the most prolific and sought-after of the fifteenth century.
