The current presentation of the polyptych is an incomplete reconstruction of parts previously divided between two museums. The frame, carved and gilded in Gothic style, and the predella are still missing.
After the polyptych was dismembered, two of the side panels depicting the Baptism and the Journey of John the Baptist and the Archangel Gabriel were cut out in the 17th century to serve as doors for a reliquary and still bear the marks of this mutilation.
