The work, historically from the collection of the Palazzo Chigi Saracini in Siena, is part of the artist's refined private devotional production.
The panel combines the classical theme of the Nativity with the adoration of the Child by the young Saint John the Baptist. This juxtaposition, widespread during the Renaissance, prophetically anticipates the bond and future baptism of Christ.
Girolamo trained in the important workshop of his father, Benvenuto di Giovanni, preserving the linear structure and rich colors of the Sienese school. However, in this early 16th-century phase, the work embraces subtle shifts toward modernity and more fluid compositional patterns.
The composition shows strong stylistic and formal similarities with other versions of the same theme painted by the artist, such as the Adoration in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena and the Nativity in the Museo Civico in Montepulciano.
