In the composition of this work, Girolamo del Pacchia demonstrates a strong assimilation of contemporary Florentine and Roman models. In particular, the style and proportions of the robes recall the monumental Nativity of the Virgin painted by Andrea del Sarto in Florence.
The influence of Sodoma's chromatic and expressive fluidity is also evident.
The scene depicts the moment following Mary's birth within a well-structured Renaissance domestic setting.
In the center and foreground, midwives and visitors move in flowing drapes, while in the background, Saint Anne rests on her bed.
