DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera and gold on panel, 247 x 212 cm.
The Madonna and Child with Saints is a painting by Giovanni di Paolo, dated 1445 and housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
John Pope-Hennessy identified this polyptych with the one painted for the Guelph family in the church of San Domenico in Siena, where it likely remained until the Napoleonic suppressions.
A 17th-century document records that the polyptych originally had a predella with the Stories of Genesis and the Last Judgement, of which a section is now known, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, housed at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The saints flanking the Madonna are:
Dominic and Peter, on the left,
John the Evangelist and Thomas Aquinas, on the right.
The stylistic references to International Gothic are evident: in the swirls of the drapery, the flowery meadow, and the elongated silhouettes.
