The Madonna and Child with Saints Jerome and Bernardine and Four Angels is an emblematic work by Sano di Pietro, one of the most prolific and representative painters of the Sienese Renaissance.
The work perfectly reflects the devotional production of the artist's workshop, characterized by a nostalgic and precious stylistic language, linked to the Sienese late Gothic tradition but influenced by the spatiality of the early Renaissance.
The Virgin Mary is depicted half-length, holding the Child Jesus, who reaches out to her in a gesture of affectionate intimacy.
On the sides are the two important patron saints of the Sienese territory:
Saint Jerome, usually depicted as an elderly ascetic or in cardinal's robes with a white beard.
Saint Bernardino of Siena, the famous Franciscan preacher, recognizable by his emaciated and stern face, whose popularity in Siena prompted Sano di Pietro to reproduce his likeness in countless paintings.
The four angels form a crown against the golden background, their faces with soft, idealized features, typical of the artist's aesthetic canon.
