Lorenzo de' Medici Showing Galeazzo Sforza His Artistic Furnishings is a famous large oil painting by the painter Amos Cassioli.
The painting belongs to the prestigious Chigi Saracini Collection, held in Siena and managed by the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena group.
The work is considered one of the greatest manifestos of Italian history painting in the second half of the 19th century.
In 1865-66, Cassioli created the cartoon and presented the work at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, receiving immediate critical acclaim.
That same year, he won the official prize at the 2nd National Government Competition in Florence.
The work was noticed and purchased by Count Alessandro Saracini, entering the family collection in Siena.
The painting evokes, in a historicist key, a precise moment of Renaissance diplomacy and patronage: the historic visit to Florence in March 1470 by Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan, accompanied by his wife Bona of Savoy.
On that occasion, the lavish Milanese duke was personally hosted by Lorenzo the Magnificent in the Palazzo Medici.
The canvas immortalizes the moment when Lorenzo showed his political ally the precious art objects, cameos, gems, and ancient furnishings collected by the Florentine dynasty, transforming economic capital and culture into a powerful form of political hegemony and propaganda.
There are smaller versions and related preparatory sketches of this subject, including one preserved at the Amos Cassioli Museum in Asciano.
