DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This work is part of a famous decorative cycle dedicated to Stories from the Life of the Virgin, executed between 1518 and 1532 in collaboration with Domenico Beccafumi and Girolamo del Pacchia.
The fresco is distinguished by the artist's stylistic maturity, which blends the Sienese tradition with the innovations of the Roman Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci.
The scene is dominated by the solemn figures of Christ and the Virgin, arranged in a rigorous yet harmonious classical structure.
Jesus places the crown on Mary's head in an atmosphere of profound sacredness.
The Roman influences and Raphaelesque style, resulting from the artist's stays in Rome, are evident.
The bodies display a strong muscular structure reminiscent of classical statuary, while the background features a distinctive backlighting effect.
At the bottom of the scene, Saint Thomas the Apostle is depicted receiving the Holy Girdle directly from the Virgin, an iconographic element dear to Tuscan devotional tradition.
Among the figures, Saint John the Baptist also stands out, his noble pose recalling the ideal of a classical Apollo.
The fresco is located in the Chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Upper Oratory).
