DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This painted cross is one of the oldest visible in the Siena area. Following the iconography of Christ Triumphant still prevalent in 13th-century Tuscany, the work depicts Christ in a frontal pose, head raised and eyes open, triumphant over death.
Its artistic quality places it among the Arezzo artist's finest works. What is striking at first glance, in addition to the beauty revealed by the richness of the colors and the refinement of the graphic style, is the overall silhouette of the work, whose graceful and slender character is quite unusual.
This is due to the fact that the work was cut and therefore deprived of the panels, or panels of wood that originally flanked the crucified Christ and added narrative elements to enhance the eloquence of the image.
We know, for example, that two of these panels, to the sides of Christ, contained the grieving figures of the Virgin and John, and we can hypothesize that smaller compartments depicted angels.
