Adorazione dei Magi (frammento) Siena
Artist: Sassetta
Year: 1433-1435
Current location: Collezione Chigi Saracini
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera and gold on panel.
The work is housed in the Chigi Saracini Collection in Siena and constitutes the main, lower section of an originally larger cusped panel.
In fact, the work was once cut for commercial reasons.
The upper section, depicting the Journey of the Magi, is now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The painting, although fragmented, represents one of the greatest masterpieces of the 15th-century Sienese school.
In it, Sassetta blends the linear elegance of International Gothic with the first geometric and spatial innovations of the Tuscan Renaissance.
The work, executed with the skillful use of tempera, lacquer, and gold on panel, displays extraordinary brilliance in the cloaks and sacred details.
