Madonna del Bordone Siena
Artist: Coppo di Marcovaldo
Year: 1261
Current location: Basilica di San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi
Original location: Basilica di San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The Madonna del Bordone is a tempera and gold painting on wood (225 x 125 cm) by Coppo di Marcovaldo, dated 1261, as attested in the center of the lower edge of the image by the inscription MCCLXI Coppus de Florentia me pinxit, meaning: (In) 1261 Coppo da Firenze painted me.
Its location within the Chapel dedicated to pilgrims in the Basilica dei Servi has determined the name by which it is known. Indeed, the pilgrim's staff is called a Bordone.
The faces of Mary and Jesus currently appear in a distinctly different style from the rest of the work, due to the work of a local Sienese painter, who repainted them in the 14th century, although the original pictorial layer remains intact beneath the overlay.
