The Sermon of Saint Bernardino is an oil on canvas painting by Dionisio Montorselli and located inside the Basilica of San Francesco in Siena.
The work is located inside the main nave, which houses a series of large Baroque and late 17th-century altarpieces.
The canvas celebrates Saint Bernardino of Siena, one of the city's most beloved Franciscan figures, captured at the height of his activity: his famous and energetic popular sermons delivered to crowds in the city squares.
Bernardino is traditionally depicted standing on a pulpit, showing the faithful his famous monogram of Christ, "IHS," enclosed in a radiant sun, a symbol of devotion that became the cornerstone of his theological and socially pacifying message.
The Basilica of San Francesco, struck by a devastating fire in 1655, which destroyed much of its ancient Gothic and Renaissance furnishings, was redecorated in the late 17th century with large Baroque altarpieces; Montorselli's painting is an integral part of this major decorative renovation program.
