DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The scene is set inside a room with very dark walls. Struck by a beam of light that rains from above, the protagonists of the painting emerge from the darkness in the background: Elijah, his face marked by old age, bows his head over the livid body of the widow's child, killed by a violent illness. A sudden gust of wind seems to shake the veil covering the mother's head, her face in tears shocked by her pain. Next to her, an elderly woman clasps her gnarled hands in prayer, looking at her small, lifeless body. Half hidden by the figure of Elijah, a young man watches the scene, a spectator who is as impassive as he is elegant in his fashionable plumed hat. The raw and insistent naturalism of the details, enhanced by the powerful use of light, reveals in Manetti a profound knowledge of the works and ways of Caravaggio, of whom he is one of the first and most original interpreters in Siena.
