Before being moved to Paris, the painting was part of a predella for the altar of the Oratory of San Bernardino in Siena.
The predella illustrates the famous Eucharistic miracle performed by Saint Anthony of Padua.
According to tradition, the episode occurred in Rimini in 1223 and was intended to convert a skeptical heretic.
The man challenged the Saint by starving his mule for three days, then placing it before a basket of hay and the consecrated host.
The animal completely ignored the food and knelt solemnly before the body of Christ held by Saint Anthony, causing the heretic's immediate conversion and the crowd's emotion.
