Sant'Ilario a Isola

SIENA

Isola d'Arbia, the place so named because, like Abbadia a Isola, it probably stood on land above the surrounding aquifer, preserves this small church, with a Romanesque façade decorated with two-tone arches. The vault of the small portal is also two-tone. A small cross-shaped window opens above the arches, and the bell tower is gabled.

An interesting flower symbol (or cross?) is carved on a stone block set into the wall, at the top right, next to which is another block with a zoomorphic scene. A cross is also engraved in the center of the portal archivolt.

This small church was one of the many places where pilgrims stopped on their way back from holy
